I agree... The level of pay usually will reflect the quality of work you get from them. A small percentage of people who work for peanuts might actually do good work... A small percentage of people who charge a lot may actually do crappy work. But if you check references, you can quickly find out if their previous clients thought there results were worth the cost.

I charge $125/hr. But as other posters have said, what people gets paid depends on the level of experience and the quality of work they produce.

I haven't come across anyone worth while that will work by the hour. Every firm I have worked for and with is always on month to month basis.

Yes that is quite rare, in 9 years working online I have come across a handful of folks like this and most of them end up raising their prices very quickly because they are in high demand.

My fee is loosely based on $35 per hour BUT I also calculate the likely hours involved based on the difficulty of the task and therefore the time involved. This also manages client expectations. I don't take all jobs, we have to be starting with a decent site offering good products.

In a recent scenario I estimated 2 hours per day over six months of 20 working days. Fee therefore came out at $8400. I wanted $2000 startup because I insist on some client commitment. The remainder is payable upon agreed results for an agreed set of keyword phrases.

That 2 hours per day is dedicated to the project, not to reporting. If the client wants detailed reports produced by me then these are extra. Alternatively the client can use his own traffic stats, Google Analytics and Google itself.

actually it depends on company also if a client hire a seo professional from a company then obviously the charge is approx 10 usd/hour, but if a client hire a freelancer then charge will do down to approx 5-8 usd/hour

SEO is an art, and as with art, the price range can be from cheap to incredibly expensive. No one will take you seriously at $10/hr - most business owners will tell you they'd rather pay $50/hr for great work than $10/hr for useless work. If you're good at what you're doing, I'd quote $30/hr minimum.

I would also consider a per-project fee rather than an hourly.

    second jg123.

Rand is a smart guy. However, he recently "ratted out" an employer of mine, (who's number one on google for "SEO Company"). We're still there, so my respect for him has fallen quite a bit. still a smart guy, but the "old techniques" of linkbuilding still work, and they are not scammy. Ohh, not to say more affordable.

But hey, I commend someone who can get $1,000/hour for their time.

It's depend on how they work, what is an experience level of that person, SEO not done in overnight it's take time and also need deep knowledge of search engine behavior.

It is tough to cost/hour for SEO work and also not a correct way to quote.

    SEO costing depends on
    • the website,
    • competition of website,
    • no. of keywords,
    • keywords competition,
    • offpage work - directory submission, article submission, link building, social media
    • no of pages in website for on page
    • seo consultancy

You can always ask for experience and accomplishments.
I tend to charge my friends at a low price of $25/hr but depending on the type of work they want done, and how large their site is, I tend to set a price and not worry about hourly.

But overall, it depends on the type of work that actually needs to be done.
