A split test is when a visitor arrives at your page they are shown one of any number of pages. Usually starting off with two. So basically, there are two different versions of your web page. You(Or Google) redirects users to the two versions evenly. So if you have 100 visitors, 50 go to version one of your page and 50 go to version two. Then, the results are measured as to which version converted better (Which version made a sale or produced a signup to a newsletter etc). When the test is over, you change your site to only display the page that performed better. That is a VERY basic overview of it. It gets a lot more complicated with multi variant testing.
I suppose you do this in Google AdWords by creating two seperate campaigns with the same keywords and advertising title and description but have the two seperate domain links for each one.
Two separate landing pages for each one. Googles website optimizer beta takes this to a whole new level
There are many ways to do split testing but the basic concpet behind it that you cannot measure the performance of 2 or more ads/landing pages/campaigns unless you test them at the same time giving them an equal chance of success.
The way to split test in Google Adwords ... - create 2 ad texts within a single ad group - make sure automatic optimization is turned off for the campaign - wait for the appropriate number of clicks - measure CTR or ROI or whatever it is you're testing - delete the ad text that isn't performing - go back and start again Google *does* make it easy for you to do split testing (forget about Website Optimizer for the time being) at the ad text level (though technically speaking, each ad gets distributed evenly for each keyword, NOT for the ad group). Website Optimizer comes in when you want to run multivariate split tests of elements of a landing page. H
Website Optimizer looks complicated! It takes it to a completely new level! fastimprovement's guide is great. perry marshall goes on and on about split testing, its very important.
