A search engine results page, or SERP, is the listing of web pages returned by a search engine in response to a keyword query Nicked off Wikipedia
It is very important than PR because...It holds a very high weightage than anything else as your SERP is great...you will get a huge traffic
It's important because it can get you traffic, which PR can't. Anyway, there just can't be any comparison between both of them, they are on quite different algorithm. PageRank is about how many sites, relevant, linking to you. Whereas, SERP uses PageRank as a factor, yes it does, to rank sites. Lots of things, so less time to tell. If you're in link selling business, you may concentrate on PR. Welcome to DP!
