what is SEO?

I have question that what is search engine optimization? how can I use this technique in any website. please tell me a little brief of detail.

All i know is that it is changing the urls to be more search engines friendly like:
www.example.com/index.php?page=aboutus would turn to www.example.php/about-us.html

it can be done using the .htaccess file, with the MOD_REWRITE function/tool/dunno how to call it.

 

Seo is the way to make a site be found easier in google, yahoo and bing. Its 2 parts -- 1 is on site and of course the other is off site.
Basically it makes the page relevant for the specified search query
On site consists of a lot of things, here are some of them.
Use h1 and h2 tags on site with keywords
use keywords in site content -- dont overuse, but make sure they are there
use keywords in urls
use alt tags on pictures
make sure content matches titles/headers/urls
Meta tags are no longer used, but meta description may be helpful
page loading speed is used, fast is good
