What is SEO?

Hi guys
in a few weeks I'll give a talk about webmasters' issues (programming, HTML and stuff) and I will need to quickly cover also the 'SEO' topic. So I was wondering what a good (and short) definition of it would be appropriate.

So here is the short list I thought about (the points should be in order of time/importance):

1. planning (choosing the right markets/keywords to target)
2. link building (choosing the right neighborhood, choosing the best anchor text, spending time/money in natural link building, do some niche social networking)
3. content optimizing (for the selected keywords)
4. link optimizing (on your own site: have a read at this: http://www.smart-it-consulting.com/article.htm?node=155&largePage=TRUE - it's really really interesting)
5. content building (quantity and quality)

Is this what (white hat... ) SEO is about? Can you think of anything else?

I think that's a pretty good summary actually. It's good you realise it's about quality content as well as quality link building. You should do okay if you give these key points.

I think one more thing to say is that SEO (as pretty much everything, today) has all the characteristics of a complex system.

Which (to me) means that:
- it's a continuous process (you have to keep adjusting your actions to the changes that occur to another very complex system, the Search Engine World)
- it a system of non-linear actions and feedbacks (which means, basically, that you are never sure of what your actions will lead to but all you can do is establish a general "direction" of your efforts)

Thegypsy sums it all. Now to your question, what is a good definition for SEO? to put in simple terms. SEO is a process to maximize your website visibility in search engines. If anyone have any other simple definition do share it.

 

SEO as a firm is which helps you to get your website optimized faster over search engine result pages. As an employee a person who takes care to maintain traffic and rank of website over internet using ethical methods is called an SEO.

Keyword research, and then putting in places like the header, title, description, content, alt tag, anchor text and then comes the Off Page activities like link building, article writing and submitting and forum posting, social bookmarking and blog commenting.This is what I do to make sure my site ranks well If I am missing anything guys please do tell me.
