Use alt tags and title text for all images(if the title tag of the image suites the page title then that image gets more value in the eyes of google)

Text around the image must match the alt tags

Use proper image Filename to determine content.[use paris-hilton.jpg better than paris_hilton.jpg better than DSC12345.jpg]

Add exif description data to your images, might be Google reads them in future.[suitable only for photography websites]
Exif is an important thing to consider for photoblog.Exif data can sort images based on lens type, date taken, photographer, and much more

    thanks

And don't forget to optimize your images. Slow loading, big images are a no-no. The smaller the image(in size, not dimensions), the better for your visitors. None of your images should be more than 40KB. For photographs use JPG's, for images with less color and need for transparency use GIF's or even better PNG's and make them as small as possible, especially background images.

and also take the advice above from B'd and you should be all set.

    Don't agree with that...
just check the image results for paris hilton.
You can see the first page results ranges from size 29k to 400k.

i think this is also because people click the better image more, that it is ranked higher. people want a clearer image of paris hilton :D

but i recommend a smaller image, not only for seo, but for people who doesnt want to wait for your images to finish loading

Yea when it comes to searching Paris Hilton online I'm sure they don't care how long it takes to load. Generally speaking, and optimizing for SEO, you need to have a low image filesize.

I believe that the filename of the image also has something to do with it. Use relevant keywords.
