Hi, I see a larger number of web sites with the little orange box with RSS etc I was wondering what exactly this is, where I could get decent information on it, and how I could use it with my sites? Cheers
Try to read this: searchenginewatch.com/showPage.html?page=2175271 or search in google for rss, xml, what is rss, rss feed xml feed etc. There are a lot of informations about that.
Wikipedia (and Google) is always your friend: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_(file_format) Basically it's a way to syndicate your content (or get content from other sites). For example, if you have a blog you could publish your posts also in RSS - and everybody with a reader could read it (and maybe slap it on their web pages). Same things for news. Make money with RSS? Unless you have hundreds (or thousands) of subscribers, I think there's no way: it's a good tool to market your news, thou. Therefore the best use - for me, at least - is to get news and content to use in my sites (Google News, for example, come also in RSS...) Have a look also at http://www.feedburner.com, it's full of useful tools. P.S.: I noticed your sig - I'm the owner of http://www.tradeover.net, maybe we can do some business together...

Here's a simple explanation. RSS is simply real simple syndication. Your content is syndicated with RSS and many sites will run your "feed" (which is your individual code) to use as content. Now you can optimize your content and feed for certain keywords which is a huge benefit... So what is the benefit of RSS? Getting visitors with good content and getting them to either buy or sign up to your newsletter. But there is a hidden benefit - which is a one way link back to your site which is why RSS is incredibly helpful to Seach engine optimization. As I mentioned, you can optimize your RSS to be keyword specific so links get the benefits of anchor texts for keywords.
Thanks guys, I guess I've got some reading etc to do. I don't have a blog, but my site would benefit from news etc, Cheers
Hi Offering news feeds (RSS) lets people subscribe to your content. RSS is built-in to blogging systems, but you can offer jazzier feeds with Feedburner, by creating them with lots of different features. Browsers like Firefox show whether a site has a feed in the browser address bar. Then you can just click on the feed icon (the little orange broadcast icon) to subscribe. My favourite feed reader is Bloglines at http://www.bloglines.com - I like being able to subscribe to feeds and read them from any computer. With my own blogs, I haven't explained what RSS is, and how people can subscribe. I'll add that to my To Do list, because it's important. More subs, more readers. Thanks for reminding me. Hope this helps. Cheers Angela
Well guys thanks for all the help. I went and created my first xml file, pretty straight forward stuff, although the pages I created it for are free product pages and not updated. It has however given me some ideas. I'm going to start a blog, very soon. I do have one question. I made the xml file and published it no probs. When I entered the URL into my browser it came up without a problem, however one several of the articels I was reading it had a link to a feed validator which would not work. The error message is always Bad Gateway The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server. Anyone know what this means. I have inserted a little orange xml pic aswell on this page http://www.atradersuniverse.com/trendlines.html Okay, so far so good. I'll do some more searching around and see where I can take this. Thanks again Dean
Dean: Hi Kris, I'm just starting to learn about RSS feeds etc, and was told that as a web site owner I can get feeds syndicated onto my web site. Is there a program in cpanel that allows this or do I have to look elsewhere? Kris: I am sorry but we do not allow RSS on our servers. Dean: does that mean I can't receive RSS? Am I still allowed to create xml files and have others subscribe to my feeds? Kris: My apologies, rss2blog is not allowed, you can use RRS feeds on your site aslong as it is not that script. Dean: Ok thanks Kris: We do not provide any RSS software for you to use that I am aware of. You would need to find the software elsewhere. Dean: ok thanks again This is a conversation I had with HostGator. I'm not really sure what it means. Could someone explain this for me Cheers Dean
What they're trying to say is that YES you can sydicate your RSS feeds and use RSS feeds to post content on your site. However, there is a script called RSS2Blog that automatically searches for RSS feeds based on keywords and automatically posts content based on the intervals you set (every other day, once every week). Your host doesn't want you to use that script because it can easily be used tp SPAM content on your blog. Also if the content RSS2Blog scrapes is copyright protected, your host may have to deal with it. Go read a tutorial for creating RSS feeds here: http://searchenginewatch.com/showPage.html?page=2175271 The best blogging platform is Wordpress which you can install in your server. wordpress.com
