RDFa (or Resource Description Framework - in - attributes) is a set of extensions to XHTML which is now a W3C Recommendation. RDFa uses attributes from XHTML's meta and link elements, and generalises them so that they are usable on all elements. This allows annotating XHTML markup with semantics. Microformats: Designed for humans first and machines second, microformats are a set of simple, open data formats built upon existing and widely adopted standards. Instead of throwing away what works today, microformats intend to solve simpler problems first by adapting to current behaviors and usage patterns (e.g. XHTML, blogging).
Understanding RDFa is only part of the problem. Your choice of words to describe your content has to be consistant with what the search engine can relate. You have to go to the search engines help section and find out what descriptions they currently relate. If the search engine doesn't understand, the whole process is a waste of time. Lots of individual metadata with no relating.
