There is no problem. I assume you are referring to Paypal. In some countries like Australia, Paypal requires an additional level of verification which involves a Phone Confirmation in order to get your account verified. If you have nothing to hide and all your details are accurate then there is nothing to worry about. You just need to comply and be done with it. This only happens on the first time when you verify.
Paypal is safe and so you just follow what they say. If they are asking your phone no. its for the purpose of verification only. Hence be prepared accordingly.
