A press release submission is when you write an article outlining your company and what it can do for others and then hand it over to some marketing specialists that 'release' the article to the world. It can have varying degrees of success depending on the company you go with.

Not necessary that you get backlinks with it, but it is worth spending the time writing about your business and submitting to top press release sites, you get noticed and with google talking about trust rank and visibility in and around the internet does help in increasing that.

Press release is a one link building activity where you can post your content like news, article etc. It declares immediate your content and It will crawl very fast by Google bot. So you can get fast back links from that and It brings you first-page visibility for your keyword very quickly.

    Quick case study for ya...

You can definitely get one-way inbound links and traffic by using press releases. Google loves them, so they're faster than regular article marketing or SEO. Try using PRWeb. They have free and paid options.

Okay, so about my friend. He did a press release on a new software tool he created. He paid the $80 for his release (PRWeb does have the free option but you get more exposure if you pay). Look at these stats:

Reads - 71,232 (This number shows how many times his press release was accessed on PRWeb).

Estimated Pickups - 2,491 (The number of times his release was picked up by a media outlet).

On Google Search, the press release returns 399 results, all with links pointing back to his website. Not bad for about an hours work, right? ;)

So go for it! And good luck! :)

Normally the Press Release Submission is when you want the world to know what is new and happening in your work place or office. You tend to advertise your work place and office so that it gets recognition.
