I would certainly prefer train over planes as the aviation sector accounts for substantially higher carbon dioxide emissions. I would prefer a carbon neutral airline for an overseas journey. According to you, who polutes the most?. Is it the plane or train. What would be your choice if you had the option to travel a particular place either by train or plane?
I would say the kerosene from a plane is more polluting, some trains run on electricity these days, so they don't pollute at all. Rob
Hey, I totally agree with Rob. I forgot about the fact that trains these days can run on electricity. As such, I think I will go with train rides, provided it is comfortable enough for long-haul rides.
I prefer the airplane but if pollution wise then train is better. This year alone there as been over 200 train wrecks so I guess I would take the bus.
There's no comparison - aeroplanes spew out tonnes of carbon every journey whereas an electric train produces less carbon than a very athletic hamster running on its wheel. The below picture represent 1 hours of aircraft flight over Hyde Park in London.
Yowch. Imagine what those nerds in cars are doing - I'd love to see an aerial pic of their pollution trails. Looks like there's a couple of solar powered planes in that pic though
If you mean the ones without vapour trails, they're just at the wrong altitude for the effects to be visible. Neat picture, huh? Obviously it was created by merging lots of stills from the same viewpoint.
Hmmm.... I wonder how those trains get their electricity. So, you are saying that because the trains themselves don't produce any emissions, they are non-polluting? What processes do you think are used to produce the emissions? Please think it through before making blanket statements like that. Plus, the other guy who said that trains pollute less than a hamster on wheels needs an elementary school science lesson!
