This is really a very old news...One student made 1 million dollar from his one page site in less then 6 months! No amount of adsense or for that matter any site can beat this. Alex made big with his great idea (his last 1000 pixel was sold on ebay for more then 38,000$). Looking at his success many similar sites and forums spawned over night but hardly anyone came close to Alex's milliondollarhomepage. Most of the such sites have sold few hundred pixel and that too other similar sites. Success of Alex page was based on his thinking, great new idea, media strategy and great story while rest of these sites are just copy. No wonder they fails to take off. So is there no future in pixel advertising? what do you think?
I'm on the "purely a novelty" side of the fence. I think it was cool, it got some press (I believe he hired a pr firm to help him and they got a HUGE chunk of what he made), but don't really see a future in it.
It's old hat, nobody will be able to repeat it on that scale. It was a great idea, well marketed and he got awesome press coverage. To come up with a truly great idea it has to be original.
Look at the million dollar homepage. It's crammed with adverts. Look at any other pixel site. 3 or 4 is the average. Basically - great one off idea made the man a fortune, now there's a million million dollar homepage variations all making Eff All. Don't waste your time on it. Link farms under another guise.
It is probably the least sustainable marketing model ever. What benefit do you get from an advert on a site like that? Sure you may get traffic but whats the chance of the person who is randomly clicking on your tiny advert actually converting to a customer?
He made a million dollars, and now can't even pay the hosting fee? The connection has timed out The server at www.milliondollarhomepage.com is taking too long to respond. * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
That's the meaning of the word innovation. But I don't think that this model will work again. It worked for this guy as he was the first to do it. There are thousands of examples like this. See yahoo, hotmail, digg, and more....
I see no problem here either! @nikolas: If it worked first time it sure can work again, you just have to present it with a new twist. think what you can do to make it more interesting!
I can't see it working again. It worked because it was so fresh and it column inches, it would have to be a pretty big twist to generate that kind of publicity again.
propz for the guy that's all I can say. After all putting your name on things wasn't new but how he translate it was awesome.
I tried pixel-marketing It has make me over $500 ($100 of which in the last couple of weeks) since the launch so I'm not loosing anything by keeping it up. But as the others have already said, it's not really worth the time nor effort setting on up as there's so much competition. Just look at the list on: http://www.milliondollarhomepage.ws
good for you man! but why you want to quit now? it doesn't take any more work after the site is up, just put the image and links as they sell.
There is no such thing as pixel marketing. It was a one time media stunt, end of story. For those of you that are making a few bucks doing it, there is a sucker born every day and you could sell just about anything to them. I will be selling laser engraved dog turds at my new site laserengraveddogturds.cc. I'm sure that will make as much as a pixel site clone.
