What is pinging?

I have heard of people pinging articles or comments I guess, but don't really know what that means. What exactly is someone doing when they ping?

 

in my understanding, pinging is a service, that make your backlinks get index faster from google

 

Pinging is used to notify various online services that your site content has been updated.

 

When you update your content with fresh content then you may ping your page url so that search engines and other related sites would know about it.

However, if you are not getting good result from indexing then you can do pinging otherwise let your content index naturally.

 

Google has a scheduled time to visit (index) bot for every contents, Today you were created a content but still wasn't indexed on Google yet because there is a time for google bot to visit your content, Why you need to ping because let other services know that your content is updated and Google too.
