I have only just started my first website in December and it has a PR of 4. I am only just starting to figure it all out myself haha. Please correct me if im wrong in saying that essentially your page rank is how important Google thinks your website it and the higher your page rank , the better your doing. If you get backlinks from high PR websites/blogs/forums it will improve your rank. So if you exchange links with 100 random sites with a PR of 0 or 1 you will not be looked that highly upon by Google, but if you exchange links with five PR 6 sites you will be looked highly upon by Google and will receive a good Google ranking. This is my understanding anyway, please other members correct me if I'm wrong.

It is the measurement technique of google for the web pages according to the vote by others. It is important for the link traders and link sellers.

People Linking to your site counts as "votes". There isn't an actual voting system it just the term they use. So the more HIGH PR websites that link to you. The higher your votes and the higher your page rank.

It is not like that. As said by MattCutts PR is one of the 200 signals that Google take to account to rank a website. So, you can't say nothing. It has little or very little influence.

Yes, you are right here. Ranking and Page rank are different.

PageRank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web. Google figures that when one page links to another page, it is effectively casting a vote for the other page. The more votes that are cast for a page, the more important the page must be. Also, the importance of the page that is casting the vote determines how important the vote itself is. Google calculates a page's importance from the votes cast for it. How important each vote is is taken into account when a page's PageRank is calculated.
PageRank is Google's way of deciding a page's importance. It matters because it is one of the factors that determines a page's ranking in the search results. It isn't the only factor that Google uses to rank pages, but it is an important one.

To put it simply, Google Page Rank is a tool developed by Google, based on clearly defined set of algorithms, to determine the importance of a website or a webpage. PR or Page Rank is determined by the number of websites linking to the particular website.

I've been spending less and less time worrying about PR. I think a lot of people stress over it because it's something that you see. It's a solid number that is related to your site. What is more important is how Google puts you in the search results. Nobody can see exactly how they do it, but obviously it's extremely important. Maybe the PR is something psychological!

I think PR is still important, you want more traffic, you must have reciprocal links, reciprocal links more effective, your PR will increase,
Counter important but you must have links to, like this exchange links,
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Well I appreciate your efforts that you have got 4 PR in just 1 month, It seems impossible.

Coming to the point Page Rank is a very important parameter of SEO. It shows the importance of your web page in Google's view. If Google think your page is very useful for the visitors and you have put something very good on your web page, it will provide you good PR.

Rest of the story have been discussed in TimothyJohn thread.

My blog has a PR of only 1.

But i managed to get my blog post appear in first page of google search results
almost always after 5 mins of posting.

Some of them stays some drop off to second or third page.

PR is just one of the 200 factors Google take into consideration when ranking
your page. Don't get too obsessed with it.
