If you are selling something, a good example of negative keyword would be "free". If you sell beer, you will be interested in people looking for "beer", but you're probably not interested in advertising to people looking for "free beer".

So, "free" would be a negative (excluding) keyword in this case.

    beer
    -free

Most of the members here have posted the answer. I would like to add up, it is highly recommended to use negative sparingly. If you want to simply generate traffic, maybe you can use it. However, if you want to have a higher conversion rate, might away stay away from using negative keywords.

Usually pertains to adwords. If there is a word or word phrases you do not want to come up for you add them to your negative keyword column so this way when people are search on Google your ad will not display when these keywords are typed in search.

The negative keywords improve the CTR by limiting the impressions of ads on pages that aren't relevant.

    Hi !

Here is your answer : Negative keywords are a core component of a successful keyword list. Adding a negative keyword to your ad group or campaign means that your ads won't show for searches containing that term. The negative keyword –free trial would prevent your ads from showing on any searches containing the terms free and trial.

You do not have to use them all the time. But it can be necessary in some case. For example, if you are selling golf items, you have to be careful, because your keyword 'golf' can be used to refer to Golf cars. So in this case, using negative keywords is really important to exclude for the same example 'GTI' or 'Volkswagen'.

I hope this is clear enough for you,

    Good luck !

he 1st place to look for negative keywords is in your Google Adwords campaigns. It’s the actual report showing for which keywords your ads got triggered in broad, phrase and extended broad match. So you can use the report to valuable keywords which you don’t want to your ads to show up for and add them to your campaigns. Go to reporting tab and create a new report. Select search query performance report, choose date range, any additional data you need under Advanced Settings and use the report to identify negative keywords
