What is most important? Content or Backlinks?

I have had my web sites close to 2 years and always tried to promote them on message boards, do link exchanges, submit to directories, etc to build traffic. I have learned alot on these forums though and I finally get is that fresh and unique content is also very important. I have limited time online so used to promote my sites alot via link exchanges, directories and message boards but neglected to update my sites often. Lately I have changed my strategy to add a few pages of fresh content each day (mostly unique). Because of the time I am spending on this I am now finding that I have little time to promote my sites like I was before so here is my question:
What is the most important thing you can do to climb in search engine rankings? Fresh content or plenty of backlinks?
I hope this question isn't too general. I am kind of illiterate when it comes to SEO.

I think relevant backlinks are the best for SEO. Fresh content is also good for SEO, but most important, fresh content create loyal visitors. So while the SE sends you new visitors many of them will revisit your site because you keep updating your content. This way the total number of visitors will grow and grow.

    Strategically both are important.

Strategically, both are important, however, it really depends on what kind of site you have.

If it's a blog site, or informative site, then fresh content is a must these days.

If you've got a shopping site, you'd be better off with the back links. I'm just thinking that at some point in time, you're going to run out of 'new content' (perhaps in terms of products?). Might only be for a while, but 'new content' on a shopping site would be like starting a fricking Walmart on-line. hahahah

Don't get me wrong, a super store on-line is nice and all, but since you will no longer have a theme, then you'd not only lose the value of the links to a degree, but then you'd have to boost your traffic with adwords or something.

    At least, thats my theory.

first good unique content = good site (no site without content " content is the king" ).
then try to build high quality backlinks.

Unless you have remarkable content your site won't attract any natural links. Links from forums and directories won't get you to the top of Google anymore.

If you have limited time each day, just split your work. Write content one day and build links the next and so on.

    Backlinks followed by content.

I'd advise to only write useful, original content and not for the sake of having fresh content or lots of pages to rank higher. Your inbound Pagerank is distributed over your pages so having more content could actually harm your website, e.g. by dropping into the Supplemental Index.

Backlinks and site content both are different thinks. backlinks help to increase your site ranking in search engine and good content attract search engine and visitors.

Backlinks. Content is not king. Its a myth. I have many sites with hardly any content and very good rankings.

I'd rather focus on content, though I wouldn't neglect backlinks. Anyway, you can always follow Gatorade's suggestion and split your work. ;)
