They are both important. If you don't have the content you can't attract the links.

Content and links are two different things. Content is the need of your site and you always needed a good content on your site to get the rankings. But the link is the way of improving your rankings which you need to place on other relevant site. so both are important.

I've heard a saying on the forum... 'Content is the King and links keep the king on the throne' - I just couldn't agree more.

Great content backed up by quality links is the key to success, one without the other is useless.

I agree with praetserge. If you have no content on your site then Google cannot know what your site is about. Once you have the content on your site you need to tell people, and the search engines, where your site is. Once you have the links Google will know where to look and when it is there it will know what the site is about.
Make sure you have both but get the content right first so people stay on your site.

If you really think about it, then content is much more important.
Because if you want to listen to google and their advice, if you have a lot of content that are interesting for your users, then the backlinks will automatically flow in :)
    You know what I'm saying?
You don't need to build up backlinks if you have a great website which people do enjoy, but then again, it's hard to create a website like that.

Ultimately content is the most important and that's because it will draw more natural backlinks to your site because people like to share it. If you can put up quality content and cause it to go viral your work is almost minimal.

    Content - On page SEO

Link (I guess backlinks) - off page SEO

Everything starts with onpage SEO, but without Off page you are doomed. Both are very important.

Content is more important, who would want to like to you anyway if you don't have good content? Who would want to visit your website/stay a while longer?

It is content is more important than link. But of course link is also important. Consider this if there is no competition to your content niche, the search engine will have no choice but to list you on the first page of the search result even if without links to your site. But to maintain it someday when someone else come up with the same contents as yours and he/she has more links to the content then you will lose your position to him/her

Content is more important because major search engines give more importance to website content and through content they measure website's quality.

The main and basic thing for google ranking is the backlinking , but after that you should work on your content and of course unique ones.

I agree with accelerator_dd on page SEO should be firmly in thus convo. Links are are not much use without refreshed content, and on page/pff page SEO distinguishes your content to the search engine.
