Microsites are small indentities of large websites.
They are mostly used by eCommerce and shopping sites. These sites have various categories which they cannot promote. So they make small microsites for these categories. These microsites can be in the form of a sub-domain, or a category to the domain or a separate site.

you will have one large e-comm site with all your products and if it is a competitive market then you may not rank for very many keywords, so you create a micro site where you have a kw rich domain and then promote a few products and rank for those products, repeat this process for your most profitable products and that all...

Here are some reason why a website is split into many microsites:

    1. Your brand name is not doing very well and you would like a part of the business to be re-branded and market it separately.
    2. Your businesses are expanding into a few different niches, thus the one site you have can’t really serve all those different businesses.
    3. You think that by splitting your site into several smaller ones you will manage to engage the visitors interested in a particular service or product. Conversion may increase as users will think that they are at a specialist’s website rather than a generic one offering all sorts of services or products.

    Hi,

A microsite known as a landing page, minisite or weblet, is an Internet web design term referring to an individual web page or cluster of pages which are meant to function as an auxiliary supplement to a primary website. The microsite's main landing page most likely has its own domain name or sub domain. This is also known as niche marketing.

They are typically used to add a specialized group of information either editorial or commercial. Such sites may be linked in to a main site or not or taken completely off a site's server when the site is used for a temporary purpose. The main distinction of a microsite versus its parent site is its purpose and specific cohesiveness as compared to the microsite's broader overall parent website.

    It help you a lot...
