What is meant by "upload robots.txt file to Top Level Domain?

    I really need some help with this.I do not understand what it means. My sites ( on google webmaster tools) all say "404 Not Found". what does this mean and how can I fix it. I am not a webmaster so I do not understand the webmaster language. I really just want someone to tell me in plain english what is happening and how I can fix it.

    It means just put the robot.txt file in the same folder as your homepage/index-page..

    In Plesk, put it on /httpdocs folder, in CPanel in /public_html folder.

    Just put the robot.txt in your root-folder. So where your index-page is...

    It means upload it to the 'www' folder of your domain which is present on the web server.

    Is this supposed to be saved in text and then upload to the rootfolder?

    Yes its is a text file having extension ' .txt ', as the name sugests ' robots.txt '.
