often one reads in TOS for shared hosting that "Apache connections may not exceed 30 connections"
What exactly does it mean? What is an appache connection
What is the limit generally set by well known names in hosting such as lunar pages, hostgator etc?

You simply can't have more than 30 people on your website.

    Hello,

Here you can find some information regarding how Apache deals with these issues:
    http://www.howtoforge.com/configuring_apache_for_maximum_performance

    See: 3.8 KeepAlive and KeepAliveTimeout
So that if they have this set to 5 seconds, for example, you can not have over 30 unique visitors to your site within any given 5 seconds time frame or the limit will be exceeded.

Hope to have explained it clearly. ;)

    Best regards.

so for sure it is 30 visitors simultaneously and not a user loading a web page with 30 pictures?

No, because they will more than likely (almost 100% sure) have the KeepAlive directive set to on. Else you would be shut down with just you visiting your site.

    OK Thanks a lot HostingProvider.

So folks, whats the usual number for shared hosting plans? 20, 30 or 50?
I wonder how the hell can they promise terrabytes of bandwidth while flipping out if a site receives 20 or 30 surfers simultaneously?
Hosting industry is a big scam if you ask me
