Link building is something like you have to make links to your website which you can make by creating backlinks, doing article and directory submissions and by bookmarking and stuff.
Like in forums you can put links to your website in your signature and it would be some kind of "link building" And let's say tonight your set up a new Facebook and Twitter accounts with backlinks to your site, after that you submit your website to some directories, then you post a comment on a blog with a link, then you submit an article to a directory, still with a backlink to your... Then you could say: "Well I've made some link building tonight!"
Directory submission is actually the start of it all. You need to submit your site first into directories and link build your site. Of course, you need to make sure that the blog or forums that you comment to, is related to your site or the content of your site.

Link Building is the process of creating a "net" of links that drive targeted traffic to your website. Building links can be done in a variety of different ways, but should focus on gaining links from websites that have a combination of keyword-relevant content, High PR (pagerank), and/or good traffic. The two goals of link building are to 1). drive targeted traffic to your website and 2). rank high within search engines for your keywords, with the ultimate goal of driving targeted traffic to your website. Example: If your selling shoes on your website and place a link on your uncle bob's used car site, it really doesn't profit you that much. The site isn't focused on shoes (so you won't get too much, if any value, out of the link as far as PR), and the people visiting the site are looking for used cars, not shoes. On the other hand, if you could get a fashionista blogger to blog about your website and how great your selection and service are, now you have gained a link on a site related to shoes that is visited by people who are interested in shoes. The result being you gain PR and targeted traffic. This is a very general overview, but I think it basically explains the need for link building. Lastly, consider the fact that if you never build any links, and no one creates any links to your site, then as far as the Internet is concerned, it really doesn't exist. Links are how people find stuff on the Internet--even with Google. If you don't tell it you are there, if it can't find any links to your site, your site doesn't exist.
Searching in Google is one of the best way to find relevant and strong websites: search for keywords related to your website, and Google gives you a list of relevant web pages, "almost" in order of importance. Just scroll down the list and see where you could get some backlinks. You can ask to the websites' admin for link exchange too (look for websites that complement yours, not direct competitors). If you are looking for the best directories, the best article directories, etc. you can find it here on Digital Point in another threads. Directory Lists: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1226782 And I asked people here about their favorite article directories some months ago so I will refer to that, some good replies: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1286005
