What is life? Does this sound like a strange question to you? Of course we all know what is meant by the word "life", but how would you define it? Do all living things move? Do they all eat and breathe? Even though we all seem to know what is meant by saying something is "alive", it's not very easy to describe what "life" is. It's almost as hard as describing where life came from. Even the biologists (people who study life) have a tough time describing what life is! But after many years of studying living things, from the mold on your old tuna sandwich to monkeys in the rainforest, biologists have determined that all living things do share some things in common: 1) Living things need to take in energy 2) Living things get rid of waste 3) Living things grow and develop 4) Living things respond to their environment 5) Living things reproduce and pass their traits onto their offspring 6) Over time, living things evolve (change slowly) in response to their environment Therefore, in order for something to be considered to "have life" as we know it, it must possess these characteristics. Lol , i feel a little philosophical right now so, here i go. I will answer in a completely different perspective. Life is actually a single horizon of any two completely conflicting things. What the heck is that? Well take any two extremely opposite ideas and life is actually both. For example, let's say life is everything and life is nothing which is true. because (ironically) your life is everything you live for. and after you lived all of it and worked your a*s out of it to make it work, what you will take from this life? absolutely nothing. zero. Then you can say life is a reality and it is dream both at the same time which is also true. To prove this let's define what is reality. Reality is that which your mind completely believes is happening right now. which it believes has happened in the past and which it believes may happen in the future. That is reality for anybody. So, if you remember any of your dreams then you know that when you are dreaming you completely believe what ever is happening is completely real. It has past, it has things happening in the present, and it has future which seem to be related. It is very real for you until at last you wake up from sleep and wondered how you actually thought everything was real. Now think about this, someday you will wake up from what you now call a real life(may be at death?) and wonder how the heck you thought that was real. Some philosophers actually argue life is nothing but a dream. Pretty weird. In a similar manner you can describe life with any two extremely opposing terms at the same time. There can be hundreds of examples of this because life is all engulfing.
