Fair enough but don't complain, just bring it back on topic like this.

So what is there left to offer in directories. My personal opinion is quite a lot. ;)

Exactly, I wish my posting style was more reserved, but there are those who speak from the heart and tell it straight. But that's the way it should be.

Na, sorry Silky, but a screenshot would reveal more than I'm willing to. The bare stats are sufficient enough for people to get the general idea of exactly how much traffic I generate. General directories will get less traffic for obvious reasons: (I used to own one for 2 years)

    Unmemorable domains
    Unattractive design
    Off-target information/content
    Unoriginal idea
Trying to be everything & serve anyone

the above doesn't inspire confidence from advertisers, which is kinda important when asking for ad revenue. You see buyers are a mistrusting lot, easily put off by yet another directory which they think will just rip them off, so getting their confidence back is now very tough to do.

And that's why a directory has to be different and unique :)

Why don't you just blank out anything you don't to reveal? Pretty much will do the job of shutting up those who question you.

Actually Jamie I wanted to see a screenie to see what stats software he took those figures from, if it's AWStats as I suspect given the format he used then it's a monthly view and the stats arn't that impressive.

Thats just a cop out, even I can make a screenie and hide the bits I dont want to show and god knows I aint a designer.

Are those stats from a monthly view in AWStats as I suspect based on the format, from what site (a general or niche directory) or a completely different site?

As for general directories getting less traffic, I disagree. :)

Actually, my stats are good considering I don't do link swaps, don't use adwords etc. The traffic I get is from search engines only and is about 5 - 7,000 uniques a month, it would be more if I had advertising, but I don't.

I must be John Wayne if 5-7000 uniques a month is considered good nowadays from search engines alone.

Without posting screenshots you're preaching to nobody but yourself, which is kind of expected of you anyway:rolleyes:

Ironic then that this being your business you would misrepresent your stats by stating "1'692 in 1 hour flat - not bad huh. And all real" when in fact it's not just one hour.

You posted that originally on the 29th, therefore it would be 29 days worth of hour 00 combined for the month of June. Not quite the 1 hour flat afterall.

Also lets drop back a post or two to your earlier comment:

Below are the stats for last month for my unmemorable domain, completely crap design, unoriginal idea, trying to be everything based directory. Where I try to serve everybody with my off-target information and content. I might add that I also do zero to promote this web directory and every drop of traffic is natural.

    Hour / Hits

    00 2866
    01 2294
    02 2761
    03 3748
    04 3105
    05 3991
    06 5855
    07 6924
    08 6541
    09 5879
    10 8094
    11 6756

My uninspired advertisers must be completely gutted with my run of the mill replicated idea directory.

Na, no point Pipes - just don't need it as everything is in-house. I don't actually trust outside stats software.

I quite like it myself, i find it very useful.

That and awstats, whatever one doesn't show me, the other one does, its enough for me.

Yeah maybe, but at least I won't be unoriginal :) So when are you hitting the papers then - just curious?

See thing is, I haven't ever seen a webmaster built general directory in the papers, for the last 10 years (since the web existed roughly) - maybe the answer is right around the corner, then again maybe it's not. Maybe someone will think of that amazing idea but it won't be you or me - unless one of us invents the next big thing on the internet. I can't see it though, another Youtube hmmmmm.

Being a webmaster is a tough life without a gimmick. No, I wouldn't run a general directory again, they are very tough things to sell.

    Rather you than me ;)

Event King, a few questions for you:

Are you looking for the next big thing?
Why do you have an interest in fame?
And why are you here if you dont do directories anymore?

Lets get to know each other :) im fascinated by you.

Why should a successful Web directory be in the papers? They are successful in their own environment - the Web.
