Latest trend is ultra-black SEO: that is: hacking google so everyone in the world going to google is redirected to your site which is a fake-google site. Wherever people click then, you get commission :)

    or:

writing a bot which crawls the web and replaces ALL google adsense ads on ALL pages with your own adsense ID :)

Here's a radical and revolutionary idea. Stop worrying about following the latest tricks like desperate third-rate lawyers looking for their next meal chase ambulances and focus on the fundamentals instead. Not only will you rank better, but you'll last longer once you get to the top as well.

SEO isn't a game, it's not a way to make a quick buck (especially when you factor in the real cost of the return compared to the amount of time you put into getting it), it's a long-term investment. Play the long game, and you'll come out better than everyone who's wasting all their time trying to come up with the next trick to keep their sites at the top, while you spend your time making other sites which will net you more money, more visitors and more returns.

There is no quick magic silver bullet. It's going to take work, and if you want to be on the top of the listings, you have to be prepared to do that work. Once you get there though, it's just a matter of maintaining that ranking.

    Here's the simple answer:

There is nothing called Latest Trends in SEO.

If there were any latest trends or ideas or w/e people would'nt be really telling you what it was just because of the simple fact that they would want to keep it to themselves.

SEO is an ever changing business and you need to adapt and experiment to REALLY juice it out and make some cash.

Stop wasting your time trying to ask people and start experimenting on your own :)

there is one thing, and this time i am not writing a satire :)

see my first posting with the link..web2.0 means an even bigger focus on social bookmarking, article submission, blogging etc....therefore (IMHO) the trend is an even BIGGER focus on content. (And sharing this content and make it accessible for others).

Just look at the "buzz-word" web2.0....and (in my opinion) we as SEOs need to put BIG (even more) attention to off-site SEO and promoting.....its not done with directory-entries anymore. Those times are over.

So, current trend: Social bookmarking, blogging, even greater and more frequent updated content. Use all means in regards to equipping your site w/ Web2.0-"features", bookmark links/buttons, RSS feeds, easy distribution of good content to digg, technorati, feedburner etc..etc..

I'm worrying about the people you hang around with, nile, many of my friends ask me every day "do you fancy a drink?" - they've never asked me about latest trends in SEO. Your friends don't sound like much fun.

Please bear in mind that PageRank is calculated on a per-page basis. A site's home page may have a PR of 6 or 7, but if your site is linked to on an internal page that has a low PR rating (and let's face it, most of what we see in our cute childish toys is stale info, usually a couple months old), then you will be getting some weight from the low PR page, not the high PR page you were hoping for (the home page).

A great example is www.sitepoint.com - a PR 7 home page the last I checked, but most of the internal pages (including the forum threads) are virtually worthless from a PageRank standpoint.

Which just reasserts my claims elsewhere on this forum that backlinks are not the end-all-be-all of SEO.

Since there are two categories for SEO activities:

    1. On-site optmization
    2. Off-site optimization

I'd have to say that backlinks is hands down the most important in the off-site optimization category.
