The number of times a specific word occurs on a web page, usually displayed as a percentage of the keyword occurence versus the total number of words on the page.

Hi, keyword density is the calculated measure of how many times a keyword is included on a web page in comparison to the total number of words currently on the web page. The method to determine the keyword density is to divide the number of times the keyword is included on the page by the total number of words.

For example, if the keyword "title" is included on a web page 10 times and the total number of words on the page is 100, then the keyword density for the keyword "title" is 10%.

The importance of knowing keyword density comes into play because the search engine algorithms can punish a web page for having a percentage of keyword density too high for a keyword and this will hurt the ranking for the page in the search results. However, if the keyword density is too low, then the algorithms will not consider the keyword an important element of the content for the web page which will also hurt the page in the search engine rankings.

Thus, the question becomes, what is a good keyword density percentage for a web page?

I would keep the keyword density around 5%. However, this is just a number. The most important thing is to write the content on the page in a natural manner using the desired keywords in places where it flows in a natural manner.

If the keyword is placed within the content in a natural manner, the keyword density is not very important. If you read the content and the keywords appear forced, unnatural or reapeated too many times within the text then you should rewrite the content. Always write first for the readers then consider the SEO aspects. Never write for the search engines directly. It is more important that the readers understand and follow the content.

From an SEO aspect, always include the keywords within the first 60 words on the web page and place the words at least once in each paragraph on the page. Also, include the keywords within the last 40 words on the web page and bold the keywords at least twice on the web page with one of the bold times being within the first 60 words.

Keyword density use to be much more important in the early days of search engine algorithm development because the algorithms could be fooled by using keyword density to help improve rankings for keywords. However, algorithm development is much better currently and the search engines can usually spot very easily the use of keyword density in an effort to affect the rankings of a keyword.

Keyword density is basically the percentage of keywords that is in your overall content such as if you were writing an article about shoes and targeting "leather shoes" then you would want to add "leather shoes" in to your article about 6-9% of the time you would calculate this after you have written the article giving you the keyword density.

I challenge that everyone talking about low keyword density in sites is talking out their ass. My sites have much higher than industry norms - and they do just fine :).

    Keyword Density:
Keyword density a measure of the amount of keywords contained in an article of text.

As an example, the post on advanced seo & sem ( http://www.kelowna-web-design.com/articles/seo-sem-advanced/ ) by Tru Design Media has the following keyword density (Listed all with 4 or more).

    Keyword Density
    Keyword Count Density
    design 23 4.61%
    tru 18 3.61%
    media 18 3.61%
    search 12 2.4%
    internet 11 2.2%
    web 9 1.8%
    marketing 9 1.8%
    optimization 8 1.6%
    engine 7 1.4%
    data 6 1.2%
    advanced 6 1.2%
    analytics 6 1.2%
    sem 5 1%
    competition 5 1%
    services 5 1%
    articles 5 1%
    website 5 1%
    seo 5 1%
    kelowna 5 1%
    million 5 1%
    site 5 1%
    similar 4 0.8%
    image 4 0.8%
    system 4 0.8%
    success 4 0.8%
    strategies 4 0.8%
    traffic 4 0.8%
    etc...

so the count, is how many times the word appeared in the text, the density, is the percentage of the keyword based on the whole content of text.

Hope this explains it in laymen terms so all can understand :)

For search engine optimizing, this article is not sufficient in keyword density. The article is about seo and sem advanced using tru design media. If we were to search for this in google, and just happened to find this domain, they would rank for tru design meda, not seo or sem.. density is a bit tricky, and you have to play around to get best results. 3% - 7% should be the appropriate range for the keywords you are wanting to rank for. You should also not exceed 5-6 keywords with a density higher than 3%... it just doesn't make sense if you did. If more than 6 words had 3% of the word count, well that just shows the article doesn't make any damn sense.

Keyword density in laymen terms is the percentage of occurrence of your keywords to the text in the rest of your webpage. If you want to rank well in the serps, your main keywords must have the correct keyword density.

Oh God, not this Keyword Density bullshit again. Frequency of use of a certain term DOES NOT EQUAL RELEVANCY.

    Read this

    http://www.searchenginepeople.com/blog/how-search-really-works-the-keyword-density-myth.html

    and weep.

Yes, your PR is a function of keyword density. Divide the percentage of the keyword density by 10, then you have the PR of the page. Example: Density 90%, instant PR 9.

Or maybe you just don't even understand either term.

There is no "good" amount because keyword density is irrelevant.

Forget about PR... PR is not necessary. Quality content, with unique content, and understanding what people search for is all that is required.

If you are unique, and have this quality content, your pagerank really doesn't matter. Except when it comes to extremely high competition.
