What is it that makes people shift jobs or change companies?

The saying goes very well: “People don’t leave companies, they leave their bosses”. Your immediate boss is a reflection of the whole organization. What is your opinion on the above mentioned subject?

I think money, favourable hours or a generally better working environment also contribute. I would probably stick at a crap job with a poor boss if the money and other conditions were right.

I think it's because they wanted to take advantage of the opportunities that comes in their lives, example they had a chance to work at a company with the higher salary, possibly they will grab it, though I think that is a hard decision for them.

You are right to a certain extent, especially for corporations.

Most people will eventually get bored with the job or want more money. Depending on how your boss is, he can either be good and help train you for new reposnsibilites so you get rewarded and try new things.

Or treat you like a peasant and make you do the same job over and over.

So you see your boss and your way up in a company, if he can't help or is hindering your progress, its time to change departments or companies.

Other times, you just don't get along with them so you have to leave before it eats you up inside.

I kinda disagree with that. If you work for a cool company, with a cool boss - but the rest of the workers are losers, then it's not much fun. Been there, done that. So many people don't actually like what they do for a job that it's very difficult to find a fun place to work - everyone is just waiting for the day to end.

I made my last "switch" in about 1995, and haven't worked a real day's work since. I went out to get lunch, went home, and never went back.

People tend to switch if they are up against a boss they cannot get along with. Personal equations come to the fore and you tend to quit!

I usually know it's time to start looking for a new job when I start wondering if using a blow torch on my eyeballs would get me out of work for a week....Actually, just taking the new job leap now and it's for more money and a happier work environment. I don't like working for Nazis...

i disagree. my last job, i was a bus girl for a restaraunt. I loved it at first. My boss was absolutely wonderful. But after a year, i couldnt take the coworkers anymore. They got greedy for money and they got so snotty. I finally told my boss that i was quitting because of them. She tried to get me to come in even one day a week but i cant take those stupid coworkers anymore and i left.

Its not just the boss. Its the job itself, the money and the coworkers that make people want to leave.

I would start looking for a new job the moment my fuses go off every few seconds.

It can be my boss, my coworkers or a deadly cocktail!

In majority of cases it is misunderstanding between an employee and management. There are thousand of reasons for this misunderstanding: employee wants his salary increased, management is not satisfied with work results or the amount of work accomplished, personal issues. In some cases it can be troubles between an employee and other people working in the company.
