Humming bird is about change in the old searching habit user can go wildly on searching like previously for example "if you want to search for a place to have a tea then you start from searching tea but now google allows you to directly search for where can i have a cup of tea"

Note: Above stated word is just an example of showing how it is working !!

So which type of keywords should target to get top SERP in Google. Long tail keywords would be effective or not.

Longtail keywords can be effective if identified properly, so use the search query data from Google Webmaster Tools (since Analytics no longer proved keywords) and insert that into a software that will track your ranking + impressions and clicks for a particular keyword. This sort of analysis will allow you to identify possible traffic generating keywords. Here's an interesting video explaining this whole idea: video link.
This video here can also provide you with more information!
    Have fun!

Google launched its new algorithm called hummingbird to give out the best results. Suppose if you are searchnig for a long tail keyword in search engine, some keyword like "flower shops in uk" , before hummingbird algorithm google shows all the related web pages which contains the keyword " flower" , " shops" and "uk". But after the hummingbird algorithm it give exact search results for the user to get relevant web pages of what they have searched for.

In hummingbird update Google provide the best and most related information to the search query and its all about the term or meaning but not in word by word aspect.

Google Humming Bird is already bringing a sea change in the way people search for information on the internet

Let me explain that and I will be brief :D at least I will try

Google devised the earlier page rank algorithm for the bots which crawl throughout the web searching and indexing information revolving around keywords. Thus google thought it was the bots who were supposed to use that information and bring it out as search results.

The SEO landscape changed drastically with time, as internet marketers started exploiting this mechanism with the way of generating content based on keywords, this brought a lot unreliable content on the internet which actually caused the actual users searching for information problems of not finding something which they actually wanted.

Over a period of time this problem got worst and malicious concepts like content farms cropped up which were basically forming content according to the top queries being put in Google.

Google brought out it's two sentinel algorithms Google Panda & Google Penguin which came to existence to fight spam and problems of

    a. Bad Links or unrelated links used to to do SEO.
    b. Bad Content.

It was later Google brought out the Humming Bird which focuses on the semantics (meaning) of the query rather than the keyword mentioned in the query. In turn it also focuses on the user intent as in the motive behind the query being searched. For example

Query - Where can I find wallets under $5?

Before Humming Bird Google would bring results which had the keywords mentioned in the query

Post Humming Bird Google would guess your intention and meaning of your query which is to find places where you can buy wallets with in a range of $5.

There is more to HB, than what I have just mentioned, nevertheless I have given you the concepts it works on
Coming to the strategy you have asked for?

Try making you content more about the topic, rather than focusing on the keywords. Try writing blogs and posts which are related to your niche. In those you could mention long tail keywords. Be creative in terms of your content marketing try and analyse the pain points of the niche of your website, address those issues. Be aggressive and creative on Social Media. Google has started laying a lot of importance on Social Signals which means, more is your social engagement better is your authority, which eventually will make your website climb the SERP ladder.
