Can anybody help? I made a website which has been online for about 1 year. When I tried to publish changes to it and view it all I get is a message that says Internal sever error please contact the webmaster at etc.... I have contacted my webhosts (www.streamline.net) and they told me to fix or remove the .htaccess file and your website will work. They may aswell have been speaking Swahili to me as I am not that computer literate. I completely reinstalled window xp on my computer and put on a newer version of Frontpage, which I was using previously. The same thing happened. I then tried using NetObjects Fusion and the same thing happens. Does anybody know how to fix this problem. When I bought my website software I didnt realise I would have problems like this with it. If you can keep any replies simple that would be great!
I'm not sure your question and your problem are related. In real basic terms, .htaccess is a file that resides on your server. Think of it as an instruction manual for all the browsers that visit the site. It tells them what they can and can not do. Interanl server errors usually mean that a script is not working. I guess it is possible that FP uses it also. Did you publish your site using FrontPage (FP)? Do you know what an FTP program is? Or how to use it? Respond and I or someone more knowledgable will help you.
Yes I did use FP to publish my website, do you think that Frontpage uses .htaccess also? When I published it I used FP 2002, later when I tried to solve the problem I put in a clean install of FP 2003 and tried to publish again thinking this would solve the problem but no. Yes I do know what FTP is although Ive never used it as all the software packages I have used had their own upload software. Do you think I should use a seperate FTP package and do you know a good one to use. Thanks
As I said I am not sure about FP and .htaccess. However I am sure that you screwed yourself with the clean install of a different version of FP. FP is tempermental at best and a POS is more like what I really think of it when it comes to publishing. If you aren't using any other FP only features you can always modify your site on your local computer and FTP the files up. I did that for about a year after I broke my ability to publish. I finally just renoved the extensions from the site. Now that I think about it, I bet the extensions are defined in the .htaccess file. I will try to look up and post a little more info for you later in the day.
Missed that last part until I had already posted. They all work about the same. I use WS_FTP the light edition. Never really tried any others. Cute and Coffeecup both have one. I would suggest that you ftp to your account and download a copy of your .htaccess file and use a pure text editor to open it to see what is in it.
