Google bombing is basically an act of influencing (or manipulating) the rankings in Google by building links to a site on a particular keyword you would like the site to come up for. What makes this particular act 'bombing' is that usually the keyword being used is a keyword that the site would NOT want to rank for. A really good example of this was back in 2006 when the #1 result in Google for the search 'Miserable Failure' was the biography of George W. Bush. His website didn't mention the phrase 'miserable failure' nor did they do any intentional building on that term. It simply was a result of people linking to his site on the phrase 'miserable failure'. Google bombing is most often used for comedic effect or with a malicious intent in mind by having a site rank for damaging keywords, and it is usually a collective goal by many people as one or two links would not be enough to cause this affect. Google has tried to fix this problem but because links and anchor text can be so powerful, it is still possible to "Google Bomb" someone.
Google Bombing means setting up a large number of Web pages with links that point to a specific Web site so that the site will appear near the top of a Google search when users enter the link text. A Google bomb or Google wash is an attempt to influence the ranking of a given site in results returned by the Google search engine. Due to the way that Google's PageRank algorithm works, a website will be ranked higher if the sites that link to that page all use consistent anchor text.
To increase the page’s rank an attempt is made on google search engine through cross linking/backlinks the sites with other high page rank site specially blogs or forums. An excerpt from techtarget website “The first Google bomb occurred in 1999. While the creators remain anonymous, the existence of the bomb was revealed when pjammer, a user on memepool.com, posted a question that asked what Google found to be "more evil than satan himself." Users searching Google for the term found Microsoft's home page as the first link in the search results. The term itself was coined by Adam Mathes in 2001, when he wrote an article about how he bombed the term "talentless hack" to play a joke on a friend, graphic designer Andy Pressman.†Regards M.
