What is going on with my site

I can't figure it out. I rank good for less important keyword phrases on my site like LBI Painters, LBI Architects, and Landscapers in 08008. However the main key word in am after is Long Beach Island. Is it possible that I abused the keyword in my website or something because I am not even ranking in the top 100 for this keyword. I don't understand what I am doing so wrong for this keyword. On yahoo I am #20 I would like to be in the top 3 but I can understand being #20. Google I am not even in the top 100. I was wondering if I can get some opinions on why. If for some reason I am getting penalized for using the keyword too much am I doomed or if I lighten it up a little bit will it correct over time.

Can you proide the URL of your site? Without knowing your site and some other details about what you have done off page there is no advice possible.

 

You might get different advice here from others but I am sure, your main ST should be LESS used on your page.
Don't think in KW density but in visitor's experience and how your copy looks to them - awful - all you read is "long beach island"!
As this term is found in your URL too it would be normally enough to use it 3 times on your page (beginning, middle, end) but you placed it more than 30 times on the page.

Your title could be better too:
<title>Long Beach Island NJ LBI Community - OurLongBeachIsland.com - OurLongBeachIsland.com</title>

This "Long Beach Island NJ LBI Community" should be your ideal title.

 

Thanks for your advice. I will make some changes and let the key words flow naturally. One more question what architects-in-lbi-nj-08008.htmlt do you think of the menu items like architects in lbi nj 08008 that i have on the side I have should i loose the "in lbi nj 08008" for each menu item?

I followed your advice and start to change everything to normal. Still i couldn;t help but notice a competitor is doing great www.longbeachislandsummers.com and they seem to have abused the keyword 20x more than I did. but like I said I haven't had the best results yet so I will try your method and see.
