What is "forum posting" - and how is it done?

I see a lot of you guys talk about "forum posting"... What is this - and what are the best ways to do it?

Is forum posting to join 40-50 different forums, make a few posts and have a signature with a clickable link?

I would think that forum posting would be pretty much pointless - because of the thousands of content-pages that a forum generates (i.e. leaving very little pagerank-juice for the links in a post)...

Lets say the top domain has PR4, and 40.000 content-pages. If each of the pages only had ONE link (which they don't), you'd still only get 1/40.000 part of the PR4 link... Even with a good, descriptive linktext, I can't see how it's of much use...

Or am I mistaken? Experts, please share your knowledge :)

First of all, you just did a forum post. Second of all, the sig links don't carry much juice - you are correct. I have my PR icon staring right at me, and for this page, it is N/A.

I always argued that in all these forums, the sig links really don't count that much - if any. But on the other hand, when I do a "Link:domain.com" - digitalpoint and other forums that I leave sig links to always appear. Do they really count? You have to go by your own site and see if it moves up or not. If your only doing sig links and your site moves up in the SERPs - then don't quit.

I think bigcat1967 gave some solid advice.

I use forum posting because it drives a lot of traffic to my particular site and is an easy way to get a backlink at the same time, i'm just killing a couple birds with one stone so to speak.

@Stormen: A lot of people do forum posting for 'one or two' links. I believe it makes more sense to be active on a couple of good forums, contribute to the forum and you are bound to get some traffic and possibly sales from it. I will continue to post in this forum even if they change links to nofollow because I earn a significant part of my income from this forum.

A couple things, you are right with the amount of link juice per post you won't see anything until after at least a couple hundred. You really shouldn't be using forum posting as the main solution in your link building campaign, but as a way to learn about being a webmaster and help others. When joining a forum it is all about the community and once you prove yourself among your fellow forum users there will be many opportunites to work on cross promotional campaigns which in turn will get you backlinks.

It's basically work taken by on the payment basis and you can earn money by posting as well as by selling your signatures links, more the number of posts done by you more will be the price of your signature links, off course it also depends on the quality of the matter in your posts.

Forum posting is not done for PR alone..... but it is a very useful tool to get excellent visibility.

Even a high trafficked forum has its threads and posts crawled far too quickly and do tend to rank well in serps as well.

You should know how to make use of it, to your maximum advantage.

But I guess, posting on forums takes time and patience. While posting on dofollow blogs yields results quickly and effectively.
BLOG POSTING:Easy to find niche ones with high PR,Make one good comment on one blog and it gets approved earning you a backlink.
FORUM POSTING:Tough to find niche ones, register, make some posts here and there until you have something like 6 or 7 or even more if the conditions are not met to put the links in posts or signatures, create signature, then again look for relevant posts and post and pray before you get banned for spamming!

So, it depends on what forum are you posting. Choose some handful of good forums like this one who allow inserting links and don't ban you. And keep posting over there in relevant topics and make your posts worthwhile instead of just agreeing or making senseless comments. Ask or Answer sensibly. Post regularly and you will be appreciated as well as respected.

    Wish you luck!

Even a NOFOLLOW forum has it's advantages. Product recognition, visibility, and most importantly HUMAN traffic!
