DMCA stands for Digital Millenium Copyright Act (USA). It is a legal notice that owners of copyrighted content can send to people who are allegedly hosting warez etc in violation of the rights of the copyright holders. As far as I know it is a sort of warning before you actually sue someone. For more, read this.
thanks you maneel, So it is something that we get before we are being sued? Let say if you get one, what should you do? and no wikipedia plz coz I know that i can google out this term but it is not the same if someone explains their experience here.
If you get a DMCA notice, the first thing you should do is remove any questionable material which violates someone's copyright and send him/her a polite mail apologizing for putting up that content. In my view, if someone is sending you a DMCA notice, he IS legally aware and has the capacity to sue you, so DO NOT TAKE IT LIGHTLY!
Digital Millenium Copyright Act is also used in Canada too, Trust me, Ive used it on Domains. its a copyright act for domains, sigs, images, etc
gotter, what you mean it is a copyright act for domains? can I get it one for my site too? will that mean people cannot sue me?
It makes people legally liable for running video sites with copyrighted materials of others they don't own and who don't want to read the laws are regarding the content. Essentially you have to have a method for owners of copyrighted materials to have their stuff taken down expeditiously and you can be held liable for your content unless you follow several sets of rules laid out in the act.
