If a goog search on my keyword is returning 3,260,000 results. Will it be impossible for my web page to rank high for this keyword?
Always see the sponsored links in the right section,if you get sponsored links upto 5 pages,then it is a high competition keyword. If there is no sponsor links, then it is a low competition keyword and if sponsor links are present upto two pages then it is a medium level. Another way to find out competition is how many direct sites link you see. Direct site links means just website links no articles, no wikipedia or shopping cart links. If direct links is upto 4 pages,then competition is medium,if it is up to 2 pages competition is low if it is up to 10 pages competition is higher.
The market I am targeting is very crowded. I can't find any keywork with less than 5 pages of sponsored links. Some have at least 12 pages. My website is for a stock market newsletter..
That's a high number, but is not impossible. I had one keyword that had over 15 million results, and I was able to rank # 1...... but I only stayed in that position for about 3 weeks then someone knocked me off... The funny thing is that when I got knocked off I moved to page 2 ;-(
The way I like to tell if it is going to be easy or hard to rank for a keyword is to scan the first 20 results or so. I use the SEO for firefox addon with which I look at the PR, age and yahoo links of the results and this gives me a fairly good idea as to whether or not I will be able to out rank them. Really keyword competition has nothing to do with how many results Google throws up, it's about who ranks for that keyword right now and how easy is it to outrank them. Just my 2 cents...
