What is classed as 'Under Construction'?

I was checking out some of the better directories to possibly submit one or two sites to but see on the terms of them that they don't accept sites 'Undr construction?'

My question is.... 99% of directories are, and always will be under construction by nature, so is it worth risking my money in the hope of getting seen as a directory and thus always going to be legitimately under construction, or am I just throwing money down the drain.

This depends on how each directory owner see this idea.
Couldn't agree more. A basic directory(nothing customized, no addons, no blah blah blah) with few listings today is nothing new under the sky, but tomorrow could become the directory we all want to submit to. Depends on how much time each owner invest in it and how much they care about what they are doing.

I always thought that if you are serious with something you'll overcome others and reach another level for sure.

A fair review will get you included. This depends only on the staff.

PS: take a look at other listings from the category you want to submit to(if exist) and think about if yours will also get included or not, just an ideea... ;)

I think the answer to this is a little simpler than you're making it...a directory can grow and improve while not being under construction.

TONS of sites add content regularly and wouldn't be classified as under construction.

Do you have the basics of the site/directory set up? categories, design, listed sites?
Do you have any pages or sections that are marked as 'coming soon' or 'under construction?'

If you've got a free template and few sites listed in a newish directory, and you're worried about submitting to some of the more discerning directories out there, do what hyper said and check out what they're already listed. You'll most likely know whether you got a good shot or not.

Perhaps send a personal follow up email to the owner, pointing out your site's strengths? It can sometimes be hard to evaluate a site, at least for me...

Under construction generally means where the site has hardly any pages, broken links, no CSS been done, perhaps even an under construction notice. I'm quite flexible, if the site provides a small amount of value to a reader I'll list it.

How can a directory not be under construction? Say I have just one category with one link then it is not under construction, but it is of poor quality, say I have 500.000 categories ready for people to submit to then is that under construction.? Spending good money on the 'hope' of getting into a directory is not simple, it is a big move for anyone. Many of the smaller directories would take your money for little review but what of the better ones?

Well to myself "under construction" means that navigation doesn't work or its links point to 404 pages or other factors as such .
I have only had a few site like this in the last few months and decided to contact one owner being he was in PHX metro area.
His response was that he just acquired the domain (paid xx,xxx for it) from someone overseas and had the site being developed
and would be done within the next 30 days... which it was ;)

    thx

Like I said, many sites, probably almost ALL the good ones, add content regularly or daily and would not be classified as under construction. Just because a site doesn't have all the content that it will eventually have sometime down the road, does not mean it's under contruction.

Think of it this way - JohnChow.com: Does he have every post completed that he will ever make? No? Is he under construction? No. He is still adding content, but that doesn't make him 'under construction.' Even before John got his most recent blog design, he wouldn't be considered under construction.

Avivadirectory - Are they under construction? No. Do they have every site listed now that they will EVER list? No. Do they even have every category that they might have in the future? Probably not. Sub-Phase Vortex Chambers could be popular in a few years, so they'd have to add that category. :D Still - not under construction. They could even change/upgrade/tweak their design and still not be under construction.

Under construction. Is that even a directory? :) Like I mentioned, do you have your categories set up and sites listed?

Yes, probably. I think a lot of quality directory owners would not list such a site.

If this doesn't help you, then I have a simple solution: Don't submit to directories that won't list sites that are 'under construction.' That way you won't have to worry about wasting your money.

Under construction means having too many placeholder pages. In other words, promising what you have not yet delivered. There's no reason to do this on a website.

When it comes to directories, multiple empty categories are effectively just placeholder pages. So if you launch with a reasonable number of listings, and they are all categorised just enough, then it's not under construction. By "just enough", I mean not having 50 listings spread out in categories that go 5 or 6 levels deep.

I personally will not except " site under construction " because i like to make sure that the site being submitted to my Directories contain clean content. I have had situations when i have accepted " site under construction " submissions and they have been full of Porn meterial.

Thanks Obelia, I guess that puts most directories under construction mode. At least I know not to waste money risking review only to be declined. :)
