Well as SEO guy, I'd say that Black Hat techniques are things that Search Engines don't want us to do since they top the search results and push down "aged"/"quality" websites and therefore "decrease the quality of the search results". So in a situation where you're promoting good quality website it's not called Black Hat, but rather "Gray Hat SEO" .... Just to note here that if you want to get involved with Black Hat SEO then I'd recommend that you don't read online articles about it since 99% of those tricks are already red by Google's search quality team and you can get in trouble (I got one of my websites banned few months back) so if you'd like to experiment don't play with your primary income site.. why is datamining considered black hat? maybe we have different definitions of datamining...can you clarify?
Unfortunately nowadays it seems that about 75% of SEO work I'd consider black hat. The web has just gotten so cluttered with crap that everyone has to use it a bit to compete. Link farms, spam, directories and on and on. All used solely to gain traffic or search rankings. Do yourself a favor and rely on organic method and promote your site and work among good company. It will take you longer to reach your goals but in the end it will be worth it.
Black hat SEO is a unethical method, it is not good for seo, i will get you good traffic and after some time Google will banning the site.
