where you use unethical methods of seo to attempt to trick the engines into ranking you faster to get more traffic. i wouldnt advise using any technique listed as black hat, the engines are smarter than that, and will penalize you. the long term effect of this is disastrous for what its worth.

The best definition i have heard about black hat is, if you feel the technique is unethical and you would not want it done on your site then it is black hat, what is white hat and grey hat today may become black hat tomorrow, it all depends how many people abuse the technique. when alot of people are abusing a technique then google usually adjusts their algorythm and let the community know that they consider this and that technique to be black hat..
