What is better?

I have a question for webmasters here:

What do you reckon is better build one site and focus on it promoting it till you make loads of cash off it, or set up several sites and promote them one by one till they make cash each.

I want an opinion of someone who has used both approaches, I want to know which is more profitable in the long run.

You set up multiple sites, but only focus on one. Keep putting all your time and energy into the one to build it up as your flagship site - then go back on work on the others.

Now here's why - you want search engines to see the other sites (even if you're not doing anything with them) so that you can get beyond the aging penalties often applied to new sites.

That's my opinion at least. Good luck.

Its always better to have more than 1 sites running at a time.
because if anything happens there will be a backup.
This is what i heard from many of my friends.
and iam trying to do something like that.

    Hope that helps

I have found that I spread my SEO work pretty thin by having 3 sites (see sig)...

But a huge advantage is that you can run different experiments on different sites, looking for stuff that works and that doesn't work...

Also, if a site stumbles, hopefully, you've got another site that's still up and running.

Please go with one site first.after you achieve success with the first one, then start another one if you really want.

Thanks for the insights, I was thinking focusing on one site and putting your energy into it you can probably achieve whatever you want. What I mean by that is this lets say I set up a site about fishing, I focus on this and my goal is to make it earn me $10,000 per month. I build a customer base, make it soar to the top of the search engines, promote promote promote its just this one site. I wont be distracted by this project and that project, wouldn't the goal of reaching $10,000 a month be so much more achievable.

So thanks for the advice Im going to focus on one site and my goal is like I said earn 10k a month with it.

first reply is good. go with that. don't spread yourself too thin. you can also start linking to your other sites to keep some traffic going to them, but don't get caught spending time on them. focus on 1.
it's also very important to set some goals. how long will you work on 1 before starting to focus on one of the others? what is the cash you want to be generating, what hits, what conversion rates, etc.?
