if it's your own website then use the stats menu in cpanel. for other websites, see if they have a counter at the bottom of the page that you can click on to view their stats.

AW Stats in Cpanel has always been more accurate than Alexa for my sites. Especially when it comes to where the traffic comes from.

I think your owntraffic stats through your hosting is more reliable for exact stats. but to get a grasp of how your website compares i think alexa is fine.

I really can't believe the confusion going around relating to Alexa. Alexa only tracks users who have their toolbar installed in their browser. While the overall rankings gathered from Alexa are fairly accurate in the top 100s, I would not put any faith in numbers beneath that.

While what Alexa is doing my sound like a noble feat to some, most just realize that they are using the data to make money. Unfortunately the online economy revolves around stats and now that Alexa has the largest database of information out there we can't totally ignore it. Just don't use it to base actual stats on.

Check with your host to see what raw stat software is installed and use that for real data and just humor yourself with your Alexa ranking.

    I like domaintools.com

They give you a lot of information about a site, including traffic rankings from alexa, compete and one more I think (i cant remember).

All of these ranking companies use statistical estimates, which work fairly well for large sites (top 10,000), but are not great for small or medium sized sites.

It's easy to cheat Alexa. All you need to do is download their toolbar and visit your own site everyday.

I tried this for one of my sites and I went from 130,000's to 23,000's within a month, and yet my actual traffic was steady throughout this period.

If you want to teack your own traffic then google analytics is the best tracking tool i have ever come across. Sitemeter is also good. But these tools are to check your own traffic logs and keep track of your visitors.

I agree go with Google Analytics. If you are looking to compare alexa graph to something else? You can use free traffic stats similar: www.compete.com
Check your rank, people visit, monthly visits etc. This is next to Alexa that is free stats. You want more details than contact comscore.

You want traffic stats: awstats comes with your hosting company. Add additional trackers like: google analytics, statcounter, extreme tracking, performancing metrics. I personally use GA and Statcounter.

Also, Microsoft is coming out with comparison to Google Analystics called Project Gatineau. Request your invites here:

    Hope this helps...

You should try using google analytics. I've found it to be better than awstats and to be quite accurate. It doesn't boost up you statistics just to make you feel better. Awstats really inflated the number that I was actually getting it seemed.

Use your common sense. You cannot see how many hits sites are getting unless they show you their logs. You can only get a rough estimate.

    Come on, man.

For comparisons I do use Alexa, I also just found this site as well:
    http://www.quantcast.com/cnn.com

For my personal site stats, I like statcounter.com, and use their free counter on 100+ sites.
