What is better, quantity or quality?

I have always wondered, whether I should pay attention to the quality of back links or their quantity?

If I get 10 backlinks from a 2 high PR forums, is it better than having 10 backlinks from 5 different forums having mixed page ranks?

Will it be the same for Google?

If you support getting more number of backlinks from different forums rather than sticking to one or two, then is it okay to have just one or two backlinks from one forum and then jump to another?

I personally think that quality is more important than quantity, so the former is better than the latter. But please remember that "relevancy" is also one factor to consider in building links. So ideally, you need to build relevant, quality links!

The Pagerank that you see on toolbar is probably an algorithmic scale. This means that pagerank 3 is quite much times better than pr 2. That's why the more pagerank you get the more difficult is to increase it.

Also have in mind that the number or the pagerank of the pages are not the only factors. You should see then number of the external links that those pages have. You might need to check the old pagerank paper that google published in 90's to see how the original PR works. Of course many changes occurred since then but you will get the main point.

I think quality is better . If you offer me 100 pr 4 links and other side you offer one link of top niche site related to my blog then I will go for second one . Because if you get link from niche related popular site then it can help you to get some popularity and get you some real coming back traffic too .

Quality and relevancy is always preferred as the algorithm is very closely based on it. Relevancy is a big factor too, plays good role in PR as well as traffic.

Mix both, but make sure to get the quality ones first to keep Google happy and then blast some links to hide your juice from competitors.

Of course its quality, however you have to realize that quality of pr jumps are not equal!

What i mean is, that it muuuuuuch much better to have 1 link on a PR 10 page instead of 10 links on PR 1 pages... I don't know if it is like this but it seems to be much more important from my experience =\

The thing is... It can be very very difficult to get high PR links =\

The consensus is quality and I completely agree. To start with, try to add 5 quality backlinks per week to your site. this is actually harder than it sounds, but not impossible. If you can reach this goal for 2-3 months consistently, your site will rank higher and the quantity will take care of itself over time. I have seen sites with 300 quality backlinks rank higher than sites with 1000 average or low quality backlinks. It probably took the webmaster of the second site just as much time, if not more to build those 1000 backlinks too. :)
