if you are wondering whether you should go with or without “www”, it does not matter. The important thing is that you pick one and stick with it.

OOOORRRRR what you could do, is you use BOTH!!! choose one like everyone says, and then do a 301 redirect by way of the .htaccess file and then you will have both at your disposal. then you dont have to worry about it.

both have nothing to do with search engine ranking or PR as if you have a close look over general search algorithm then you will find when you put your domain name then a program checks the domain first. If it has www then it's send the url to next stage and if it doesn't have that then it adds www and then passes it further.

There is big difference in terms of backlinks generation! normally www. is highly preferable against www/

As far as SEO is concerned it does not matter. As long as you are consistent with one.

I use www. domainname...as long as your consistent it should be ok but I think people tend to prefer the www option.

I've been thinking, (I know I shouldnt, but....) so, how many sites out there that serve different content for www and non-www site on same domain?
not many, and if they do its completely legit...
how many sites are there that serve exactly the same content for www and non-www site on same domain without any kind of redirect?
sh1t loads, i think, it was the default option for web server install and there are ALOT of webmasters that doesnt care about google, seo etc, but actually have very good content websites.
So, the question is, why the search engine would punish website for having www and non-www exactly the same when the whole world knows about notion of "www"?
of course, I am not talking about having www1, www2, ww and so on subdomains with same content, but just www subdomain should be treated as a default, harmless alias to the main site....

anyway, can someone confirm that google thinks that www is a duplicate of non-www and punishes the site?
I cant see any duplicates in Webmaster tools for my sites, none of them has the redirect from non-www to www....

    LOL! I love Indian joke!

Many sites use non-www and got the 1st page rank.
Many other sites use www and also got the 1st page rank.

I don't think it will be much different. The important thing is you stick with one type or url for your site. If your majority or your backlinks use www then you should redirect non-www to www. I just understand like that. Why bother much whether it's www or non-www? Is it very very important aspect of your site SEO? I don't think so.

there's an HTML directive nowadays to indicate the 'definitive' top level, if it concerns you that much.

Only thing I'll say is that Wordpress seems to dispense with the www bit by default...
