Nofollow usually used to control the flow of your PR, and to avoid duplicate contents being crawled by google, such as tags page.

Only those you really don't want a comment from in the first place won't comment. A genuine user contributing to a blog or what have you is not going to care if the links they post is nofollow. Only those that are there to spam there link care about such things. So losing those users is of no consequence.

Dofollow is better - take something (traffic) and give something (PR value)

dofollow is better, but it may get annoying when people try to spam on the comments.
does being a dofollow or nofollow blog impact your PR?

most blogs are no follow to control spamming. I'm more comfortable in setting up a no follow than do follow to lessen the spam and take good care of my blog.

In my opinion , Nofollow will be better , as Dofollow will encourage people to comments on your posts , but most of them for only getting backlinks not because they are interested .

but you can stop spam using Captcha code below the comment box , I'm using it , and no spam since I've put it .

thank you all for your sharing :)

I think it would be good if you support the do follow movement.. Just make sure you retain manual approval of the comments so that you will be able to check and approve only those that contribute or provide good ideas to your posts.. In turn, you reward these meaningful comment posters with backlinks.. :)

Dofollow blog will attract a lot of readers to your blog and would leave lots of comments to take advantage of this. On the other hand, you will also attract potential spammers.

If you have the time to check comments one by one and have the time to review the websites that were linked, then by all means use dofollow. Try to remember if you link to bad websites search engines will penalize you.

In my opinion, it is better to use nofollow, instead of using your time checking comments, use it to write useful contents. :)

I'd say both have their Pros and Cons. Dofollow would gather you more traffic and will make users to come back many a times to get new backlinks. Nofollow on the other hand wont get back users unless your content is really good. The biggest problem in having a dofollow comment section is that some1, say a competitor can link a bad neighborhood to your site, which will harm your reputation with the search engines and drastically bring you down the SERPs.

I have been running a dofollow blog for nearly 2 years now before calling it quit. There are several plus points for each dofollow and nofollow blogs.

It's like double edge knife running a dofollow blog or nofollow blogs.

It is all depends on your preference.

    Dofollow Blogs Pros:
    1. Attract more comments
    2. Attract more traffic
    3. Best solution for new blogs to get traffic and comments
    4. For example, I able to increase my Alexa from 1 million to 35k within 2 years of blogging.

    Dofollow blogs cons:
    1. Attracts more spam comments
    2. Taking huge time moderating spam comments
    3. Links in comment linking to some bad neighbourhood sites
    4. Funny or unrelated keyword will be used as name of the commentators most often to comment.
