If you have some sort of content that people will spread themselves, or you can incentivise them to spread your content then Twitter could be really good for you. I think the days when you could just spam Twitter relentlessly and hope people would click on your bit.ly affiliate links is over. I'd be interested if someone says otherwise. I have about 20 twitter accounts with 300-400 friends each.. nothing huge but i suppose it could be automated.
Spamming Twitter is about as much use as spamming emails. The problem with Twitter is that there are too many spammers trying to get you to sign up to their thing. Just sit and watch your Twitter feed for a few minutes and see how many good tweets you see. It won't be many, especially if you are in the Internet Marketing niche.
Maybe try to look up for people who are interested in the topic of your website on Twitter. that's easy to do if to look up for followers of of the similar websites' twitter accounts. then follow them. if they find you interesting they will follow you back that's the easiest way to promote yourself on twitter and then to benefit from this!
It's totally ok to follow more people than have more followers. Some people might think of it as less popularity score but I personally feel if your account is new, you would be following more people and as you grow in popularity that number can come down.
It is great micro blogging site for sharing stuffs to the world and getting traffic. It is a combination of instant messaging and blogging. May be these methods will increase your traffic : Follow your related friends Reply them directly, re-tweet their post, try "follow friday"
