If you have products to sell, eBay might be a good option.

Ask yourself first of all, what do you like doing? There must be something you are passionate about, i suggest go for it, your chances of succeeding are far more than just jumping into a market just because others make money.

Honestly, Id first start by seeing how much financial support you have first.. You need product to sell before you can start a site. Unless maybe you find a drop ship.

I would sell digital downloads if you want to make an easy store and not have to ship anything.

test, test, test! Also, make it something you're passionate about so you don't feel like marketing is a chore. try selling a few things on eBay to test, run an adwords campaign for potential keywords to see if there's enough market potential and not too much competition in your intended niche. there's a great testing strategy in the 4 hour work week that can help too.

Your best bet is to find a category of product that can't easily be sold in a bricks-and-mortar store, either because it's too obscure/nichey, too big, too expensive, or just not found in your average town. Otherwise, you'll find yourself competing with WalMart. If you have an expensive hobby with specialty knowledge you can leverage, so much the better.
