For free blogs, I recommend Wordpress, http://wordpress.com, and Blogger, http://www.blogger.com.

Drop less than $10, register a domain at GoDaddy, and then use Host Gator in conjunction with a WordPress blog ;)

I guess you're trying to make money from your blog in which case this'll be no good to you; but LiveJournal have great free blogging ^^;; Unfortunately, they don't allow you to insert your own Adsense. But you can put sponsored links, etc.

Even if you're not trying to make money, it is well worth the small investment to have a blog hosted on your own domain. It makes you look much more credible than having a .blogspot (or equivalent) domain.

You can do that live LiveJournal using your DNS config for your host. It makes all the links http://www.yourdomain.com/ whilst still getting content from LiveJournal.

Right, I just meant it's better to do that than host on a .livejournal domain ;)

I would recommend Wordpress, it has many features and also supports many templates
