It is a link on someone else’s site that leads to your own, and it’s extremely important to garner a large number of backlinks that are reputably obtained for several reasons. First, in SEO or search engine optimization, part of the algorithm for ranking your page on search engines is determined by the number and quality of backlinks to your site, providing they occur naturally and you have not purchased them. Second, backlinks are how you get known on the Internet. If lots of other sites provide a link to yours, a natural increase in traffic to your web pages occurs.

There are many ways to get back link these are few method you can get back link easily: Directory Submission, Article Submission, Blog Comment, Forum posting, Social Bookmarking

Suppose you have a website 'A' and another website 'B' links to you i.e. B---->A, then the incoming link from B to A is a backlink. Backlinks are an important part of SEO. Also, if possible, the backlinks should have the keywords in them. There are many strategies of getting them. If you see below my post there are two links, so i am using my signature to get backlinks from this forum. Various strategies are:
    1) Directory submission
    2) Article marketing
    3) Press Releases
    4) Social Bookmarking
    5) Forum postings
    6) Blog commenting

    ....and many more

Don't worry about wasting a lot of time trying to get links everywhere.

Focus ALL your efforts on getting links that are specifically related to the content on your page.

What you want is links from sites that bring people to your blog that are interested in what you have to say.

TO put it in terms that anyone could understand, when a user types in a phrase, lets say they are typing in "Buy a row boat", the search engine turns around to 50 billion websites and yells "Where can I guy a rowboat?".

    The most popular response wins.

In this case, the backlinks are who choose who is most popular. They all vary in power as well, for example, a brand new site with no backlinks would have the power of exactly that to another website. Whereas, if a website like Facebook provided a follow backlink to that site, it would literally make that site unbeatable in the search engines due to the amount of power that a backlink from Facebook would have as many others link to Facebook, and so on and so forth.

Backlinks are incoming links to a website or web page. Inbound links were originally important as a primary means of web navigation; today their significance lies in search engine optimization (SEO).

Back-links are hyperlinks placed on another website which link to your site. The most powerful back-links are one-way, meaning that another website has links pointing to your site, but you don't have a reciprocal link pointing back to theirs. The search engines often see these kinds of links as the most valuable because the website doing the linking is not getting anything in return, so they must be linking to you because they really think the site is valuable.

A backlink is a link to your website from another website (do-follow website or blog). When you comment on do-follow blogs you get a backlink for putting your website in the blog comment. The more backlinks you have, the higher your page rank will get and you will get more traffic from search engines.
