what is back link?

    what is back link _?
    forexample when i write google search "yahoo.com" there are 242.000.000 result but when i write link:www.yahoo.com(people says this is back link)
    2.350.000 result .. what does it mean. why they are diffrerent?
    and what is google's criters to give backlinks?

    the backlink number is a number that tells us how many other sites link to that particular site (eg. the one you used after 'link:') ;)
    So for your search it means there are about 2.350.000 other sites linking to yahoo.com

    and remember, the "link:" command does not filter unique domains for the backlinks... ie-100 links to a site from different pages of a domain is not counted as 1
