    The a in the <a> HTML tag (most commonly used for links) is an abbreviation of anchor. So the anchor text means the actual text used in the link, for example in:

    <a href="http://www.example.com/">Lorem ipsum dolor</a>

    Lorem ipsum dolor is the anchor text.

    It is what norfstar said. The purpose is to give an idea of what you site is so people will want to click on the link. Look around at all the signatures on DP and you will see the purpose of an anchor text. It is best to use something connected to the keywords you are focusing on or the niche you are targeting.

    it is the text used on your link and the benefit here is if you put your keywords on your anchor text, you'll get a better chance of ranking on that certain keyword

    My understanding is that it's important to vary your anchor text and use keywords as applicable when building backlinks.

    I just thought I'd point that out since I think the reason we're asking about anchor text is for SEO purposes. :eek:

    I'd say Anchor text and link deployment maybe the most important aspect of SEO. I have an excellent article on this topic at my site.
