I struggle with advice saying "find an effective keyword", "do your research" because I am so new at it that even that does not make sense. Can anyone explain the micro-baby-steps, please?
Anyone who is successful in driving traffic to their website: How do I start off? the product? the niche? or somewhere else?

If you want to get an effective keywords , you need to research using the keyword research tool such as adword keyword tools and seobook. You need to check the daily searches of keywords in the major search engine and checking the competing pages in google search result.

If you want to get traffic for a site , you should select what is the niche of your site? Getting traffic is based on alexa traffic ranking and getting links to high traffic site.

Go through Google keywords suggestion tool. Employ those keywords having less competition and more traffic according to your business and time frame.

You need to find something that people want. Go to Google trends and check out what is popular. Goto yahoo answers and see what people are asking. Go to shopping.com and see what people are searching for. Its not an exact science and its difficult to teach really. Theres lots of ways to find popular things.

In all seriousness you can take pretty much any niche and find keywords that people are searching for. Just pick something and start researching.

    Example: Pets.

If you are into animals you could set up a site with pet information. In this model you could set up a site simply to make money from adsense. But you dont want a site simply about pets because there is to much competition. Narrow down your search to dogs, cats, fish whatever. Then narrow it down even further, alsation dogs, king charles spaniel dogs etc etc.....Open up your keyword tool and start typing in keywords, it soon becomes obvious which ones are popular. Dig down as deep as you can looking for keywords with high amounts of searches. Because we are using adsense as the income you also want to look for high price keywords. Use your keyword tool to get the number of other results in Google, this is your competition, the lower the better.

Once you have a list of low competition, high number of searches and high price keywords you need to create single pages on your pet site that are tuned to these keywords.

Next you need to get incoming links to your site. Get links to the individual pages you created above with the keywords in the anchor text. Iv found the best way is to write articles for ezinearticles.com but there are loads of other ways.

Thats just an example but you get the idea. Its the same with every site, you need to find popular keywords with little competition, build a page around that keyword and then blast as many incoming links as you can to that single page. The key is to find the right keywords, you can do it using googles keyword tool and then google itself but its painstakingly sloooow, its much quicker with a tool.

The keyword research process can be broken down into the following phases:

    Phase 0 - Demolishing Misconceptions
Phase 1 - Creating the list and checking it twice
Phase 2 - Befriending the keyword research tool
Phase 3 - Finalizing your list
Phase 4 - Plan your Attack
Phase 5 - Rinse, Wash Repeat
