What is adWords good for, these days?

    Hello,

    Yesterday I got a adwords voucher in the mail, so today I decided to spend a couple of hours trying to make something out of those $100.

    After a couple of hours creating ads and reading through the fine print on the TOS, I haven't succeed getting a single adbox running! Not even one!

    Also, it seems that it's nearly impossible to set up ads as an affiliate.... especially because these days, no more than one advertiser will be accepted linking to the same target domain.

    So... does that mean adWords is only good for promoting your own product and services, these days?

    Has anyone out there had success promoting something as an affiliate, recently?

    You shouldn't be linking to an affiliate offer! Because only one ad at one time can be pointing to any one domain - and you risk having your adword account closed down for not following the adwords landing page and site quality policies.

    You should be pointing to a high quality blog/website landing page - preferably a capture page so that you can followup by email.

    That's exactly what should be done whether you're advertising on Adwords or any other PPC/Ad network. Always pre-sell your potential leads/sales so that by the time they get to the product's page they're hot and ready to take action (and make you money :)).

    Hum... but isn't there something in their TOS against e-mail harvesting, as well?

    From what I have gathered, the only way to get approved is submitting pages where main focus is providing value to the end user, rather than getting value from him. In that sense, bridge pages (whose focus is merely sending referrals to an affiliate program) as well as data collection / squeeze pages are a big no-no.


    Don't take me wrong tho: I agree that pre-selling and trying to build a list from PPC traffic is effective.... however it needs to be done somewhat subtly, especially when it comes to Adwords.

    Exactly - it's a matter of being transparent about the purpose of the optin. If the optin will add value to the information given Google doesn't consider it it 'email harvesting' as you put it. But try to put the traditional squeeze page (headline, five bullet points and an autoresponder form) in front to them and it's goodbye baby :)
