People search by keywords. If a keyword phrase typed in a search engine match exactly with the same phrase on your site, your site will probably be listed in Google results. There is a lot of competition for almost every single keyword or keyword phrase, so you have to compete to get your site on 1st page on Google. Then, if a keyword is popular (have high search volume - searches/month), you can expect a lot of traffic. If your site is on 3rd page on Google, you'll have much less traffic...

Use this Keyword suggestion tool to see which keywords (or keyword phrases) have high serach volume in Google, Yahoo, MSN, than from which particular country (US, UK, AU...) people search what...

Keywords play a important role for site promotion. Your site will be index on the basis of keyword. When someone type words on the search bar when it matches with your keywords then it will be shown to the users.

They are called ''KEY'' words for a reason.

If people search for a keyword and you happen to rank well for it, the search engines will send you traffic. There may be many keywords that you might be ranking for, but because nobody searches for them, it does not translate into traffic.

One of the reasons why Wikipedia gets so much traffic is because it ranks very well for many keywords on Google.
